Feeding the princess has been MUCH easier the past week than the previous two. We finally got the go-ahead from the eye doc to take the cone off for brief periods, mostly when she’s being fed or held (so she can’t scratch herself).

After hand-feeding or holding a bowl up inside her cone every meal for the first two weeks after surgery, this was a welcome change! :) The princess is also enjoying making a huge mess all over the kitchen floor like usual. *grin*

I realize my last few posts have made me sound very much like a Gloomy Gus. I’ve mostly wanted to share with those of you who might have a dog about to go through this process, so that you know what to expect – because there’s so much that your vet won’t be able to give you an idea about, no matter how fabulous they are. :) It’s been tough for us to watch the little bit go through this, but we definitely have hopes that once everything settles down (no more cone, all settled in our new place) that the princess will be able to adapt more easily to this new lifestyle and start running circles around us all again!

Thanks to all of you for your continued support, kind words, and comments. They really have helped us through this more than you can imagine!

still stylin in the cone

Even with the cone, the princess is still the best dressed pug in Toronto. ;)

Now that the Atropine has worn off, the princess doesn’t jump quite as much at shadows, but I’ll be honest: while her eye docs continue to be pleased with the performance and reaction of her operated eye, I have found that her behavior isn’t what I would have expected. She rarely walks out in front anymore on walks, preferring to lag behind. She often balks at shadows and textural changes on walks. Even without the cone, she can’t seem to see well enough to go down some sets of stairs, and has had to be carried down, particularly in the new place.

It’s also very odd to see a large oval pupil where once there was a round one! *smile*

She did have a bone this weekend but her eye got a little bulgy afterward, so we were worried enough about her eye pressure to discontinue the bones until I check with the eye doc later today or tomorrow.

I wish we didn’t have to do all this to her at the same time – the surgery, the move – but there wasn’t much choice in timing, after the first surgery had to be cancelled.

We continue to hope and plan for a back-to-mischief Merry by mid-fall. But regardless of her quality of sight, we’ll continue to love and cherish the little bit and, of course, spoil her rotten.

bucking for knighthood

Well, we figure it’s easier to buck for knighthood than sainthood – both Merry and I enjoy being a little bit naughty once in a while (chocolate? chocolate, anyone?). :)

Yes, this photo was taken pre-cataract surgery, but the eye vet assures me she’ll be ready to model again in a week or two which is fabulous news!

Meanwhile, enjoy this shot of the princess modelling one of her Halloween costumes and looking like a pug version of Joan of Arc!

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend, everyone.
